Bayern Munich II have won the 3.Liga capping off an incredible season that nobody really expected. On the final matchday, Bayern II went to Kaiserslautern and lost 1-0; however, other results on the day went their way, and the little Bavarians still lifted the trophy at the end of the day.
Obviously, this is the highest finish ever for Bayern II in the 3.Liga. Their previous high finish was 5th during the first season of the 3.Liga back in 2008/09. This is also the highest finish ever by a Reserve side.
As for the match itself, it was a tight contest with the best chances falling to Maximilian Welzmüller and Malik Tillman for Bayern II in the first half. Kaiserslautern, however, held their own and came close through Janik Bachmann. Still, the match went into the halftime break scoreless.
Unfortunately for Bayern II, the second half started in disaster. A poor backpass from Nico Feldhahn allowed Christian Kühlwetter to intercept and beat Ron-Torben Hofmann to make it 1-0 in favor of Kaiserslautern.
Kaiserslautern would hold on to the 1-0 for the remainder of the second half.
Bayern XI: Hoffmann – Stanisic, Feldhahn, Richards, Will (68. Waidner) – Stiller, Welzmüller (68. Musiala), Kern – Dajaku (52. Kühn), Tillman (52. Arp), Jeong
With the loss, Bayern II needed some help on the day in other matches, and they received exactly what they needed. Eintracht Braunschweig lost a 4-3 shootout to SV Meppen and Würzburger Kickers only managed a draw against Hallescher FC.
In the post-match celebrations, Otschi Wriedt was awarded the trophies for the player of the season and golden boot, while Sebastian Hoeneß received the coach of the year trophy.
Congratulations to Bayern Munich II on the incredible season and championship!
