Jordan Zimmermann may have thrown his last pitch for the Detroit Tigers.
On Saturday afternoon, manager Ron Gardenhire announced Zimmermann was placed on the 45-day injured list with a right forearm strain, Gardenhire said.
Zimmermann, whose contract expires after this season, was experiencing forearm soreness before Friday night’s intrasquad game and did not make his scheduled start.
He will be rehabilitating the injury, not undergoing surgery, Gardenhire said.

“He understands everything that we’re doing here,” Gardenhire said. “We’ve had conversations with him. It’s not exactly the way he would like it, but he understands the problems we’re having with the short season and trying to put together this roster.”

Gardenhire said the Tigers are hopeful Zimmermann can return to the mound before the season is over.
“Somewhere down the road, maybe at the end, I think he wants to show people that he can pitch. But he’s got a road ahead of him, trying to stay well.”
Zimmermann, 34, signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Tigers prior to the 2016 season.
